Seiko Instruments Inc and Nemoptic enter into a license agreement for Memory Effect Display (BiNem® technology)
~Seiko Instruments Inc. starts sales of their own design for Memory Effect LCD displays based on Nemoptic's BiNem® technology.~

Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII) and Nemoptic concluded a license agreement enabling SII to independently develop, manufacture, and market their own memory effect LCD displays using the bistable BiNem ® technology. SII plans to make the best use of its own sales network to grow sales of its independently developed and manufactured products. This latest deal complements the preexisting subcontracting agreement between the two companies that was signed in April, 2007.

SII’s highly sophisticated production technology, developed as a leader in LCD mass-production for mobile phones, enables uniform control of LC cell at the 1.5 micrometer level, and forming particular LC alignment.

BiNem® (Bistable Nematic) technology is Nemoptic’s breakthrough technology that enhances existing LCD technologies with memory effect, superior image quality and wide-viewing angle. This results in displays with the ability to retain data and screen image without using power. Energy is required only when changing the screen content.

Expecting a strong demand growth for Electronic Shelf Label (ESL) systems in retail markets and e-book markets replacing paper, SII is to sell its own products and expand sales volumes utilizing its network of affiliates and distributors using its well developed sales know-how with the new agreement. SII plans to start production at a rate of 100,000 displays per month by March, 2009, with further production volume increases forecasted.
